Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, yet many forms of cancer are highly treatable — or even curable — when detected early. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 30–50% of all cancer cases are preventable, and early detection dramatically improves survival rates across most cancer types.
In India, breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer collectively account for the majority of cancer diagnoses. Despite this, public awareness of early warning signs remains critically low. At Trustmed Hospital, we believe informed patients save their own lives. Here are seven warning signs you must never ignore.

ToggleLosing more than 5 kg without changes in diet or activity — and without an explanation such as thyroid disease — can be an early indicator of cancer affecting the stomach, pancreas, oesophagus, or lungs. If you’ve ruled out other causes such as thyroid disorders, consult a specialist promptly.
A new lump in the breast, testicle, lymph node, or anywhere under the skin should always be evaluated by a doctor. While most lumps are benign (cysts, lipomas), any lump that is hard, irregular, painless, or growing should be investigated through biopsy and imaging without delay.
A cough lasting more than three weeks — especially with blood in the sputum, chest pain, or progressive breathlessness — requires urgent investigation for lung or throat cancer. Hoarseness that persists beyond two weeks without a cold or throat infection may indicate laryngeal cancer and should not be dismissed.
Persistent constipation, diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or a feeling that the bowel doesn’t fully empty may indicate colorectal cancer. Similarly, blood in urine, pain during urination, or frequent nighttime urination can be early signs of bladder or prostate cancer. Never attribute rectal bleeding solely to haemorrhoids without a proper examination.
Oral ulcers or skin sores that fail to heal within three weeks — especially in smokers or tobacco users — are a classic warning sign of oral or skin cancer. White or red patches inside the mouth that do not resolve should be biopsied. India has one of the world’s highest rates of oral cancer, largely due to tobacco and betel nut use.
Any unexplained bleeding — including blood in urine, stool, or sputum; abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods or after menopause; or nipple discharge — warrants immediate investigation. Post-menopausal vaginal bleeding is particularly significant and should always be evaluated to rule out uterine or cervical cancer.
While most back pain has a musculoskeletal cause (see our guide to back pain and spine health), pain that is constant, worsens at night, or is unresponsive to standard treatment can indicate spinal or bone metastasis. Cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, and kidney frequently spread to the spine.
Regular screening is the single most powerful tool for early cancer detection. Recommended screenings include mammography for women over 40, Pap smears every three years from age 21, colonoscopy from age 45, PSA testing for men over 50, and low-dose CT for long-term smokers. Including cancer screening panels in your annual health checkup package can catch abnormalities before symptoms develop.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) confirms that lifestyle modifications — eliminating tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, protecting against sun exposure, and getting vaccinated against HPV and Hepatitis B — can prevent a significant proportion of cancers.
Fatty liver disease is increasingly recognised as a risk factor for hepatocellular (liver) cancer. If you have been diagnosed with fatty liver or experience related symptoms, learn more in our detailed article on fatty liver disease symptoms and warning signs.
Post-menopausal women face elevated risks for breast, uterine, ovarian, and colorectal cancers. Understanding the broader landscape of women’s health changes after 40 — including hormonal shifts that may mask cancer symptoms — is essential for every woman entering midlife.
Cancer is most treatable when caught early. Don’t wait for symptoms to become severe — schedule your cancer screening at Trustmed Hospital today and take control of your health.
